President to participate in Moldova – EU Summit in Brussels
President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu will participate in the Republic of Moldova – European Union Summit, due in Brussels on 22 June. The EU will be represented by President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
The Republic of Moldova – European Union Summit is a high-level dialogue format established by both sides and reflects the increasingly close partnership between Moldova and the EU, as well as the firm commitment to our country’s accession to the EU. This year’s meeting takes place one week after the official opening of accession negotiations on the first cluster of chapters, Fundamental Values, marking a new stage in our country’s European path.
During the summit, leaders will discuss the next steps in the negotiations and the Republic of Moldova’s reform agenda. Both the European Commission and the European Council have confirmed that the Republic of Moldova is ready to open negotiations on all clusters of chapters, as provided for in the merit-based accession process.
The summit agenda will also include topics related to the regional situation, strengthening cooperation in the fields of security and defence and energy, as well as EU support for the economic development of the Republic of Moldova.
At the end of the summit, the leaders will adopt a joint statement and hold a press conference.
