VIDEO // Justice, anti-corruption and strong institutions priorities in negotiations with EU

The European Union recognizes the progress made by the Republic of Moldova in the accession process, but the advancement of negotiations will depend on the authorities’ ability to turn reforms into concrete results for citizens, the Office for European Integration states.

According to the institution, the first group of negotiation chapters, Cluster 1 – Fundamental Values, represents the basis of the entire accession process and concerns the consolidation of democratic institutions, justice reform, the fight against corruption, the protection of fundamental rights and the modernization of public administration.

“The European Union recognizes the progress made by Moldova and is ready to advance the accession negotiations, but success depends on the country’s ability to turn reforms into concrete results for citizens: fair justice, strong institutions, the fight against corruption, better public services, a competitive economy and full respect for fundamental rights,” the Office for European Integration notes.

The institution emphasizes that the pace of accession negotiations will be determined by the way in which the assumed reforms produce real changes in people’s lives and contribute to bringing the Republic of Moldova closer to European standards.

According to the cited source, Cluster 1 – Fundamental Values is focused on building a state with efficient and accountable institutions, an independent judicial system, a modern public administration and quality services for citizens.

“Cluster 1 is about building a Moldova with strong institutions, fair justice, efficient administration, protected rights and an economy prepared for full integration into the European Union,” the Office for European Integration mentions.

The Republic of Moldova officially opened negotiations on Cluster 1 – Fundamental Values during the second Intergovernmental Conference Republic of Moldova – European Union, held in Luxembourg. This is the first group of chapters in the accession process and includes areas such as the rule of law, the functioning of democratic institutions, public administration reform, the judicial system and fundamental rights.
