Moldovan PM has meeting with representatives of local public authorities from Soroca district

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu today in Soroca discussed with mayors and representatives of deconcentrated public services the situation in the district and the priorities for the coming period, so that people’s lives improve and the region continues to develop.

"The cooperation with local public administration for the modernization of our settlements is essential. Let’s review the priorities, how and where the financial resources identified by the government should be allocated, and find solutions together," the PM said in his dialogue with the mayors.

The prime minister emphasized that many major projects in Soroca district had already been completed or are underway through the European Village programmes. In total, 70 projects are being implemented, worth over 166 million lei, including the construction and rehabilitation of water supply systems, public lighting systems, as well as the renovation and equipping of public buildings. In addition, another 5 local development projects, worth over 9.6 million lei, are being carried out through the Europe is Close programme.

During the discussions, mayors pointed out that the problem of ensuring access to drinking water stayed pressing for certain localities, along with the lack of authorized landfills in villages and the absence of a wastewater treatment plant in Soroca. "We want to solve these problems through government programmes, including through projects offered by the Environmental Fund. So far, 65 km of water pipelines, 3 water towers, 2 pumping stations and 4 water treatment stations have been built, and the bids for the construction of the Soroca wastewater treatment plant are currently under evaluation. The plant must meet citizens’ needs and quality and safety requirements," the PM noted.

As for roads’ infrastructure, the prime minister underlined that the Road Fund for 2025 amounts to 2.7 billion lei – the largest allocation in the history of the Moldova – including for the repair of 54 regional roads. The Soroca–Arionesti–Otaci route is undergoing capital repair, as is the R14 road (R6 – Codrul Nou – Soroca – Unguri – border with Ukraine), with a length of 31 km, which is currently 60-per cent completed.

A separate topic of the dialogue concerned the activity of Soroca District Hospital, which has been renovated and equipped with modern devices following investments of 64 million lei. In Soroca, a Primary Stroke Center has been opened, along with a colposcopy office; 5 gynecology offices have been modernized; 7 new ambulances have been purchased for the emergency medical assistance stations; and pharmacies have been opened in the villages of Nimereuca, Rudi and Rublenita through the Pharmacy in Your Village programme.

Significant investments have also been made in the district’s schools and kindergartens, including current and capital repairs, construction of new sanitary blocks and provision of equipment, furniture and teaching materials. The Petru Rares Theoretical Lyceum of Soroca is in the process of being transformed into a Model School, one of a total of 35 to be created nationwide.

Also, the business infrastructure is being developed in the municipality of Soroca through the expansion of the existing business incubator, and the rehabilitation of the Soroca museum is nearing completion.

The PM urged mayors to use the full range of instruments available to strengthen their administrative capacity, so that they become strong mayoralties capable of providing quality services to citizens. "The progress achieved so far shows that Moldova is moving forward and that we can solve people’s problems with perseverance, patience and a lot of work," the prime minister concluded.

The population of Soroca district is about 60,000 people.
