Alexandru Munteanu: It is realistic objective for Moldova to join EU by 2028
Alexandru Munteanu, proposed by the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) for the position of Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova told a TV show that the country's accession to the European Union by 2028 represents a realistic and priority objective.
"The majority of citizens voted for European integration, and the objective remains realistic: Moldova's accession to the European Union by 2028," Munteanu stated, emphasizing that the future government will transform the governing program into a clear strategic plan, combining PAS's goals with the citizens' needs, so they become achievable.
The proposed Prime Minister mentioned that he had informal discussions with European leaders, including President Emmanuel Macron and Donald Tusk, noting that the message concerning Moldova's European path is well understood and supported.
"However, success greatly depends on how well we do our homework at home," Munteanu explained.
As for national security, Munteanu highlighted the importance of preventive preparation:
"Moldova is a small country, and we must be prepared for any eventuality, given the regional context. My experience and what I have seen in Ukraine show that preventive preparation is vital; we cannot rely solely on others. It is important to build security through efficient methods, modern cyber protection systems, infrastructure, and international cooperation."
Regarding his reasons for accepting the position, Munteanu stated:
"I accepted the position of Prime Minister at the request of the President. I came to contribute concretely to the future of Moldova. For me, the connection to my country is deeply personal – my family, friends, and projects are here."
He mentioned that his professional experience, in the academic sector, at the National Bank and the World Bank, as well as managing international investments, prepared him for governmental challenges.
"I have used international jurisdictions for administrative and fiscal efficiency, respecting legislation and paying all necessary taxes. My experience in handling complex businesses and challenging environments has prepared me for governmental challenges," Munteanu added.
Regarding the formation of the government, he emphasized that he wishes for continuity and balance.
"I do not want radical or hasty changes in the government, but conscious, efficient, and result-oriented reforms. In the relationship with PAS and other parliamentary factions, my goal is to discuss the governing program pragmatically and transparently, to gain the necessary support for implementing economic and security policies."
His vision for his mandate includes transforming Moldova into an integrated and prosperous European state.
"My mandate is not strictly limited to four years – my intention is to do everything within my power for Moldova to become an EU member by 2028. My mission is to contribute to economic growth, state strengthening, and citizens' security."
