First European Forum of Environmental Human Rights Defenders held in Strasbourg; Moldova’s experience presented by EcoContact
The first European Forum of Environmental Human Rights Defenders was organized by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on June 3-4, this year. NGO EcoContact presented the experience and progress of Moldova in this field at the event.
The event, the first of its kind held in Europe, brought together environmental defenders, representatives of public institutions, civil society’s organizations and international experts, in order to discuss the protection of individuals and communities who defend the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
"For EcoContact, participation in this event was an opportunity to bring to the attention of European partners the experiences and challenges from Moldova and to contribute to the exchange of practices on the protection of environmental rights and civic space," EcoContact said.
The discussions focused on strengthening protection mechanisms for environmental defenders, cooperation between institutions and civil society, capacity building, gender-sensitive approaches and enhancing public participation in environmental decision-making processes.
The Forum gave participants the opportunity to share experiences, analyze the challenges faced by environmental defenders and identify solutions and recommendations to improve policies and support mechanisms at the European level.
