VIDEO // Moldova and Ukraine reaffirm: Our future in EU
The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine have reaffirmed their commitment to the European path. At a conference held today in Chișinău, the Chair of the Committee on Foreign Policy and European Integration of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, Doina Gherman, and the Chair of the Committee on Foreign Policy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Oleksandr Merezhko, emphasized bilateral solidarity and mutual support in the EU integration.
Doina Gherman said that the European Union, together with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, “will become stronger, safer, and more united,” stressing that the shared future of the two states lies in the European family.
The Moldovan official highlighted the support provided by the Republic of Moldova to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion, including the management of the refugee flow. According to the data presented, almost two million Ukrainian citizens have transited the Republic of Moldova since the start of the war, and currently around 140,000 are on the country’s territory, mainly women and children, benefiting from access to education, health, and social protection services.
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament underlined that the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine share common values such as democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights, stating that these principles form the European foundation of both states. She also mentioned the importance of continuing reforms and the process of accession to the European Union, including the opening of accession negotiations.“I am very glad that the Republic of Moldova, together with Ukraine, will be able to contribute to the peace, security, and prosperity of the European Union. The Republic of Moldova needs a European Ukraine, and Ukraine needs a Republic of Moldova integrated into the European space. We will continue to do our homework at home. We are committed and engaged in the process of joining the European Union. We believe in meritocracy and fairness and consider that we are ready for the opening of the next negotiation chapters. Yesterday, in Brussels, it was confirmed both by the European Parliament and by the European Commission that there is broad consensus on supporting the European path of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine,” she said.
The Chair of the Committee on Foreign Policy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Oleksandr Merezhko, said that the Republic of Moldova has proven to be a “reliable friend and partner” for Ukraine in the context of the war launched by Russia.
“When the war broke out in Ukraine, we realized who our true friend is,” the Ukrainian official said, thanking the Moldovan authorities and citizens for their support.
He stressed that Moldova and Ukraine share a common future in the European Union and fundamental values such as freedom, the rule of law, and respect for democracy. He also expressed confidence in Ukraine’s victory and thanked the Republic of Moldova for the solidarity shown during the war, including in managing refugees.
