PHOTO // Minister of Energy inspects construction works at Chișinău Electrical Substation: project completion deadline remains unchanged
Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu paid a working visit on Tuesday to the Chișinău Electrical Substation to review progress on Vulcănești–Chișinău Overhead Transmission Line project. During the visit, the minister received confirmation that the project completion deadline remains unchanged – 30 June 2026.
According to the Ministry of Energy, work is ongoing at the Chișinău Electrical Substation on building cable ducts and underground crossings. The outdoor container has been completed, and the protection cabinets have been delivered and installed. In parallel, cable imports are underway, with the necessary connections to be carried out in the immediate period.
At the same time, works at the Vulcănești Electrical Substation are in their final stage. The protection and control equipment has been tested, and the electrical actuation of the primary equipment is currently being checked, along with preparations for commissioning the facility. The Vulcănești–Chișinău power line has a length of approximately 157 km and connects the 400 kV Vulcănești Electrical Substation with the 330 kV Chișinău Electrical Substation. The transmission capacity of the line is up to 630 MVA, which will allow coverage of more than 50% of the Republic of Moldova’s consumption during peak periods. The Vulcănești–Chișinău overhead line is part of the Power System Development Project of the Republic of Moldova, financed by the World Bank Group. The total value of the project is approximately 61 million euros, of which about 27 million euros are allocated for the construction of the power line.
The project is implemented by the Government of the Republic of Moldova through the Ministry of Energy and UCIPE – the Energy Project Implementation Unit, and the direct beneficiary is the state enterprise Moldelectrica.
The Ministry of Energy emphasized that the Vulcănești–Chișinău power line will significantly strengthen the energy security of the Republic of Moldova, providing the possibility to transport electricity from Romania and from the European market directly to the central and northern regions of the country. The project will reduce the vulnerabilities of the national power system and contribute to increasing the energy independence of the Republic of Moldova.
