Deputy parliament speaker says Moldova must strengthen defense capabilities

Moldova must strengthen its defense capabilities, in the context of regional risks triggered by the war in Ukraine. Deputy Parliament Speaker, the head of the parliament’s foreign policy commission Doina Gherman has made statements to this effect at the programme, At 360 Degrees, on Radio Moldova.

The official emphasized that the state had the obligation to develop its military and institutional defense capacities, both through training and by modernizing equipment.

“It is essential that we strengthen our defense capacity. Beyond the neutrality that is stipulated in the Constitution, we as a state, as authorities, are simply obliged to move forward and consolidate our capabilities, because unfortunately, for more than three decades, no political class until now, whether willingly or not, has carried out this reform,” said Doina Gherman.

She also said that neutrality “does not protect us” in the face of security risks and that Moldova must be prepared for potential threats.

“We simply cannot sit and wait for the aggressor to come after us. Obviously, we need to be prepared and well-equipped for defense,” the deputy speaker noted. “It is a consequence, a risk that, probably every day since the war of aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine began, we have all noticed... We each time condemn the war of aggression against Ukraine,” the official added.

During the night of June 7 to 8, a drone exploded outside the village of Lopatna, central Orhei district. The incident was reported by a local resident, and the police and specialized services intervened to secure the area. According to the authorities, the fragments of the device showed signs of an explosion and investigations are ongoing to establish the origin and circumstances of the incident. No casualties or material damage were reported. The Foreign Affairs Ministry condemned the incident, describing it as an infringement of Moldova’s sovereignty.
