DOC // People applying for citizenship to be required to know Romanian language, provisions of Constitution

Individuals applying for citizenship of the Republic of Moldova will be required to know the Romanian language and the provisions of the Constitution. The decree of promulgation and the Citizenship Law of the Republic of Moldova have been published in today's issue of the Official Journal.

According to the document, the new law aims to unify the procedures for acquiring citizenship, eliminate discrimination between applicants, and create a more transparent and secure legal framework.

Thus, citizenship can be obtained by birth, recognition, adoption, guardianship, reacquisition, or naturalization.

The document also introduces anti-fraud measures, following the discovery of approximately 100 attempts to fraudulently obtain citizenship using forged documents or those of unknown origin in recent years. The checks will include the travel history, financial situation, and integrity of the applicant.

The document also prohibits the submission of applications through intermediaries or powers of attorney to minimize corruption risks. Furthermore, it will clearly delineate cases of application rejection (for technical reasons) from refusals (when the applicant does not meet legal criteria). Persons subject to international sanctions will not be able to obtain citizenship.

The law will come into force three months from the date of publication in the Official Journal of the Republic of Moldova. The government will approve the Regulation on the procedure for acquiring and losing citizenship of the Republic of Moldova and will align its normative acts with this law.
