In 2025, EU to earmark 60 million euros to strengthen Moldova's defense capabilities
In 2025, the European Union will allocate 60 million euros to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Republic of Moldova. President of the European Council António Costa made the statement at a joint press conference with head of state Maia Sandu.
The official emphasized that the EU represents a project of peace, and therefore the union will continue to support security.
"A project of peace means that security and defense are a priority. Peace without defense is just an illusion. We have created the European Peace Facility, a very important instrument designed to support the defense capacities of countries. The Republic of Moldova is the second-largest beneficiary of this peace instrument. 137 million euros have already been offered to enhance Moldova's defense capabilities. In 2025, the EU will provide an additional 60 million euros to boost the country's defense capabilities. We will continue to support peace and security for Europe, and for this reason, we invest in defense not to provoke a war, but to maintain and ensure peace. We support the Republic of Moldova so that it can defend its independence, to be free in choosing its future, and the country's future chosen by its citizens represents our common path – towards our common union," stated António Costa.
António Costa is today in Chișinău at the invitation of President Maia Sandu. The visit takes place three years after the submission of the Republic of Moldova's application for EU membership. The European official will hold meetings with the entire leadership of the country and representatives of civil society.
The Republic of Moldova submitted its application for membership to the European Union on March 3, 2022, obtaining candidate status in June of the same year. In June 2024, accession negotiations were officially launched.
