Moldova, UNESCO to strengthen cooperation in culture, education, innovation
Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi today had meetings today with Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Audrey Azoulay and the nominated candidate for the position of Director-General of the organization, Khaled El-Enany, on the sidelines of the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference.
According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE), during the discussion with Audrey Azoulay, the officials reviewed the cooperation between Moldova and UNESCO. Mihai Popsoi thanked her for the constant support provided to Moldova in promoting national goals in the fields of culture and education, as well as for how she had led the organization in a difficult geopolitical context over the past eight years.
At the meeting with Khaled El-Enany, the Deputy PM congratulated him on his nomination for the position of UNESCO Director-General and wished him success in his mandate. At the same time, Minister Popsoi emphasized the interest of Moldova in deepening cooperation with UNESCO in strategic such areas as cultural heritage protection, scientific innovation, artificial intelligence governance and media education.
“Moldova stays an engaged and dedicated partner within UNESCO. We will actively contribute to the organization's agenda and continue investments in education, culture and innovation, in order to build an open and resilient society connected to international standards,” Mihai Popsoi said.
Khaled El-Enany has been nominated by the UNESCO Executive Board for the position of Director-General, with the official vote to be cast by member states during the General Conference session on November 6, 2025.
Moldova has been a member of UNESCO since 1992 and actively collaborates on projects regarding the conservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, education for sustainable development and ethics in science and technology.
