Moldova hosts meeting of Council of Europe Congress Bureau

The Republic of Moldova will host a meeting of the Bureau of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, the executive body of the Council of Europe that ensures the coordination of Congress activities between plenary sessions. The event is taking place at the Palace of the Republic.

During the meeting in Chișinău there will be an exchange of views on the local public administration reform launched in the Republic of Moldova, with progress made, existing challenges and good European practices in the field to be examined.

Subsequently, Secretary General of the Government Alexei Buzu, Congress President Marc Cools and Congress Secretary General Mathieu Mori will hold a press conference to present the conclusions of the meeting and answer journalists’ questions.

Speaker Igor Grosu had a meeting on Monday with Marc Cools. Grosu noted that the Republic of Moldova is preparing for one of the most important reforms aimed at the country’s towns and villages – the reform of local public administration – and expressed thanks for the support provided by CALRE.

The Congress Bureau is responsible for preparing the agenda, monitoring the implementation of adopted recommendations, and coordinating monitoring missions on local and regional democracy in member states. The Congress represents local and regional authorities from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe and has the mission of promoting local democracy, administrative autonomy and good governance, in accordance with the principles of the European Charter of Local Self-Government.

The Republic of Moldova has been a member state of the Council of Europe since 1995 and participates actively in the work of the Congress through its national delegation made up of representatives of local and regional authorities. Over the years, the Congress has produced several monitoring reports on the state of local democracy in our country and has formulated recommendations for strengthening local autonomy, decentralising competences, and improving the financial framework of local public administration.
