Moldovan PM announces decisions taken amid yellow, orange codes of severe weather

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu today announced a string of measures to protect the population and ensure the proper work of public institutions, following the yellow and orange codes for sleet and strong wind forecast for the night and day of February 18.

According to the prime minister’s decision, ministries, central authorities and other institutions will change their work schedule for February 18, starting activity at 09:00, in order to reduce the risk of accidents and ease traffic congestion. The end of the workday and the possibility of remote work will be set by the heads of institutions, depending on needs.

Additionally, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) and the National Army will provide support to local authorities, in order to ensure access on critical road segments and to protect the population.

At the same time, local public authorities, together with educational institutions will decide on the feasibility of holding classes remotely on February 18.

The prime minister specified that all institutions responsible for crisis management would activate operational protocols and present their intervention plans.

Munteanu called on citizens to follow official information and to pay attention to children, vulnerable persons and elderly neighbors, in order to prevent incidents caused by adverse weather conditions.

According to the State Hydrometeorological Service, from 17 February, 14:00, to 18 February, 20:00, heavy snowfall and intensifying winds with speeds of up to 15–20 m/s are forecast across Moldova.

As a result, blizzard conditions will be recorded, with snowdrifts forming and visibility significantly reduced. Black ice will form on roads and sleet and glaze ice are expected in some regions.
