President condemns attack on Kyiv Pechersk Lavra

President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu has condemned the attacks launched against Ukraine, including the bombing of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of the most important symbols of Orthodoxy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The head of state said that these actions show once again that “the murderous regime in Kremlin has nothing sacred.”

“Those who claim to be defenders of Christian values have bombed one of the most important symbols of Orthodoxy, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List – the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra,” the president wrote.

The head of state noted that the attacks took place during yet another night of bombardments against Ukraine, which resulted in civilian casualties and significant damage to infrastructure.

Maia Sandu sent a message of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and reiterated the Republic of Moldova’s firm position of condemning attacks against civilians and places of worship.

“In the face of these cowardly attacks, we must remain in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. The Republic of Moldova firmly condemns attacks against civilians and places of worship and stands by Ukraine in its fight for freedom, peace, and the right to decide its own future,” the president said.

On the night of 15 June 2026, Russia launched a new wave of attacks on several regions of Ukraine, with Kyiv and Kharkiv being the most affected. Preliminary figures indicate at least nine people killed and dozens injured, including five rescuers who died during their interventions.

In Kyiv, one of the strikes caused a fire at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a monastic complex included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of the most important religious symbols of Ukraine and a UNESCO site, has previously been affected by Russian attacks in the context of the war launched by the Russian Federation. UNESCO has previously warned that Ukrainian cultural heritage is at major risk.
