President: EU integration only guarantee for Moldova’s security and economic development
The European Union is our salvation and at this moment, the Republic of Moldova is enjoying unprecedented support in this process. Meanwhile, Russia seeks to derail the path and will try to influence the elections this autumn. In these circumstances, it depends on the choice of our country's citizens if we will manage to continue our path towards European integration. Head of state Maia Sandu made the statement at a TV show.
The president said that at this moment, the most serious challenges to the security of the Republic of Moldova are hybrid attacks. Maia Sandu added that these will boost in the context of the autumn parliamentary elections.
"It will be more than last year, and last year the interference from the Russian Federation was quite significant. But we should not be scared; we already have experience, it's not something new for us, we just need to be vigilant. The state institutions need to do their job very well, but beyond that, each of us must be aware of this risk and understand the opportunity," Maia Sandu said.
The head of state emphasized that the European Union is "our salvation" both in terms of ensuring security and on the economic development front. Additionally, the support offered to our country in this process is very substantial, including from EU member states and Brussels officials.
According to her, most citizens want our country to go on the European path, while Russia does not wish for this and will try to divert the direction chosen by the Republic of Moldova, with the parliamentary elections this autumn being crucial.
The official remarked that European integration could take three to four years. "In the complicated security context we are in, we cannot afford a longer period," the president said. She also stated that she wishes for the Republic of Moldova not to be decoupled from Ukraine in this process. "I do not wish for this to happen. I hope a solution will be found. It is in our interest for Ukraine to also be an EU member state. Therefore, it is in our interest to be surrounded by the EU," the head of state concluded.
The president also announced that the progress made by the Republic of Moldova on the path to European integration and the reforms to be implemented will be analyzed at the Moldova-European Union Summit, which is scheduled to be organized on July 4 in Chișinău.
"This Summit is a format for candidate countries, and we will have similar Summits annually. It is an opportunity when all the leadership of European institutions comes to Chișinău or sometimes it could be in Brussels, and they discuss with the government, the parliament, the president about the stage where we are in the accession process, what works, what does not work. Thus, we take stock of all our activity and plan how to proceed further. For us, this is the first Summit at this level," communicated the head of state.
The organization of EU-Moldova summit was announced in May by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. "We look forward to the next Moldova-EU summit, which will take place on July 4 in Chișinău," Ursula von der Leyen wrote on the X network.
