President in Yerevan: European integration- main strategic project of Moldova

Integration into the European Union is the most important priority of the Republic of Moldova, President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu said on Monday ahead of the European Political Community Summit held in Yerevan, ARMENPRESS reports.

Maia Sandu stated to journalists that the discussions during the meeting will focus on strengthening democracies, support for Ukraine and the country's European path.

“We will discuss how to better protect our democracies. We will express our support for Ukraine. And the Republic of Moldova will once again discuss with its European partners its path towards integration into the European Union. This is the most important project for us,” said the head of state.

In the same context, Maia Sandu emphasized Europe’s role in promoting democratic values and strengthening the institutions of the rule of law.

“Europe must become stronger. Europe believes in democracy. Europe has taught us all how to uphold democratic values and how to build democracies. I am sure that Europe will continue to become stronger and will remain the most democratic part of the world,” added the President of the Republic of Moldova.

Maia Sandu is participating today in the European Political Community Summit, hosted in Yerevan by Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan. The event brings together leaders from more than 40 countries across the continent and represents an essential forum for political dialogue, security cooperation, and the strengthening of European unity.

The Republic of Moldova submitted its application for accession to the European Union on 3 March 2022, and on 23 June 2022 it obtained candidate country status, with a recommendation to continue reforms. In November 2023, European assessments confirmed Moldova’s progress and recommended the opening of accession negotiations, a decision approved by EU leaders in December 2023. On 25 June 2024, accession negotiations officially began.

In September 2025, the Republic of Moldova concluded the bilateral screening with the EU – a stage that assesses the compatibility of national legislation with the European acquis. In mid-December 2025, our country launched technical discussions on the first negotiation chapters. Chisinau authorities stressed that this stage marks a crucial phase of the accession negotiations, which will form the basis for future progress in integrating the Republic of Moldova into the EU.
