European Parliament supports increasing funding for Moldova in future EU budget

The European Parliament today voted on a report proposing an increase of almost 12 per cent in the funds allocated to Moldova and other candidate states within the future multiannual budget of the European Union for the period 2028–2034. The announcement was made by MEP Siegfried Muresan.

The document stipulates an increase of the Global Europe budget line by approximately 12 per cent compared to the initial proposal of the European Commission, which could provide additional resources to support candidate countries in the accession process.

“My report proposes a 12-per cent increase in the budget line that will finance Moldova and the other candidate states. In this way, we are providing a solid starting point for securing adequate funding in the next financial framework,” Muresan said.

The MEP emphasized that the document also provided for the creation of dedicated pre-accession financing lines for each candidate state, including Moldova, a measure that would ensure predictability in the allocation of funds.

“We are calling for dedicated pre-accession funding lines for Moldova and the other candidate states, so that these countries clearly know what support they can rely on in preparing for accession,” he specified.

According to Muresan, the exact amount that will go to Moldova will be determined only after the completion of negotiations on the EU’s overall budget, but the proposed increase creates favorable conditions.

“Just as Romania and other states have benefited from pre-accession funds that contributed decisively to their modernization, it is essential that Moldova also has the necessary resources to support its European path,” the MEP noted.

He added that supporting Moldova is also in the strategic interest of the European Union:

“A reformed, more prosperous Moldova, prepared for accession, is in the security interest of the entire European Union.”

The adopted report becomes the official mandate of the European Parliament for negotiations with the European Commission and the Council of the EU on the future 2028–2034 multiannual budget.
