The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine intend to accelerate the signing of a memorandum of understanding between electricity transmission system operators Moldelectrica and Ukrenergo and advance preparations for the project involving the second circuit of the Bălți–Dnestrovsk power line. The new interconnection could increase electricity exchange capacity between the two countries, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said after meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Sergii Koretskyi, in Kyiv.

“An important topic of our discussions was energy security. We need resilient, interconnected energy systems integrated into the European market. We want to accelerate the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Moldelectrica and Ukrenergo and advance preparations for the project involving the second circuit of the Bălți–Dnestrovsk power line. This interconnection could add 500 MW to electricity exchange capacity. It is an important step toward strengthening our energy independence and security,” the prime minister said.

During the meeting, the officials discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, including through the expansion of electricity interconnections and deeper cooperation on the natural gas market.

The Ukrainian prime minister highlighted arrangements for gas transit through the Trans-Balkan Corridor and noted that Moldovan companies are already using gas storage facilities in Ukraine.

“We value our energy partnership, including the arrangements for gas transit through the Trans-Balkan Corridor. Moldovan companies are already using Ukrainian gas storage facilities,” Koretskyi said.

The development of the Bălți–Dnestrovsk Hydroelectric Power Plant power line, with a voltage of 330 kV, is among the energy infrastructure projects previously discussed by the authorities of the two countries.
