Moldovan speaker responds to Socialists criticizing EU support package

The financial support of 1.9 billion euros offered by the European Union will be used for the development and modernization of the Republic of Moldova. These funds will be used to build hospitals, kindergartens, roads and create jobs. Speaker Igor Grosu made the statement today, responding to the criticisms made by the Party of Socialists. In a statement published on the official website, PSRM notes that the funds allocated by the EU represent "a step towards the country's indebtedness."

He said that European funds will be used for the development of the Republic of Moldova and held the Socialists responsible for not wanting this. Grosu pointed out that all projects carried out in the country's localities are funded with European money.

"Now, the European Union is offering us the largest financial support in the country's history - 1.9 billion euros, of which 520 million euros are grants, meaning free money. Dodon does NOT want to build roads, schools, hospitals, he does not want to create well-paid jobs and have successful local businesses. Do you know why? Because he wants Moldova to remain poor, undeveloped, with mud and collapsed buildings. Because a poor country is easy to control by his gang and Kremlin. Dodon does not want money for the citizens, he wants money only for his own pocket. People, have you seen kindergartens, roads or hospitals repaired with funds donated by Russia? No. The projects in our villages are financed by the EU and member states and other Western partners, and this can be clearly seen by anyone in the district," Grosu said.

PSRM says that the support package offered by the EU is not "real aid" and has called for public debates on the issue.

"Instead of offering genuine development opportunities, the current government accepts conditions that will burden future generations with enormous debts. We are convinced that investments in the Republic of Moldova should focus on strengthening the country's sovereignty, economic development and social sector, not on fulfilling external orders. (...) We believe that any major financial commitments should be made only after consultation with citizens and considering their long-term impact," the PSRM statement reads.

He also reminded the Socialists about the loan of 200 million euros they intended to take from Russia while in power.

The Republic of Moldova can progress only alongside the European Union, Grosu said, citing the standard of living in states that have joined the EU as an example. "This is how we want Moldovans to live," he said.

The European Parliament approved on 11 March the support package of 1.9 billion euros for the Republic of Moldova. This represents the largest financial aid provided by the EU for the Republic of Moldova.

The EU assistance will strengthen the resilience of the Republic of Moldova against hybrid attacks and Russia's interference, which target its democratic processes and institutions. The support package includes 520 million euros in grants and 1.5 billion euros in low-interest loans. The mechanism also provides for pre-financing of 18% of the total support, increased from the initially proposed 7%, which will allow the rapid mobilization of resources to ensure energy security, enhance the fight against corruption and modernize public services.
