Government Secretary General rejects mayor’s statements on local public administration reform

Government’s Secretary General Alexei Buzu rejects the statements of capital’s mayor Ion Ceban on local public administration reform, calling them “false accusations” and “disinformation” that divide society.

The official emphasized that the local public administration reform is a necessity so that town halls become strong and capable of modernizing all localities.

“ I regret that Mayor Ceban has a decorative speech about dialogue and cooperation, yet makes false accusations about the local public administration reform. Such misinformation does not help us make a better reform; it only frightens people and divides society. The local public administration reform is a necessity if we truly want town halls to become strong and capable of modernizing all localities. We want people to have the same living conditions and well-paid jobs not only in Chișinău, which, as the capital, currently offers more opportunities and benefits from the large number of businesses, but also in the North and in the South. The reform must be a joint effort of the Government, politicians and mayors,” said Buzu.

He noted that the Government will continue to encourage amalgamation, provide financial incentives, and simplify procedures.

“We are convinced that a strong community is one that makes decisions for itself and has the resources to develop. Every decision to amalgamate is a voluntary process chosen by the communities. This reform is not just a simple redrawing of the map; it involves impact analyses, rigorous implementation, and the identification of financial guarantees. This requires responsibility and commitment, not statements that trivialize the subject. We urge everyone to contribute to building a strong local administration, not to undermine any complex and serious topic through disinformation and populism,” Buzu said.

Ceban criticized the local public administration reform and invoked so-called risks that it allegedly poses to local democracy.
