Remembrance and Gratitude Day to be marked in Moldova through events

Remembrance and Gratitude Day will be marked in the Republic of Moldova through events to honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the integrity and sovereignty of our country. The plan of events organized in the context of the 34th anniversary of the start of the armed conflict on the Dniester River is included in a decision approved today by the Government.

The project provides for the establishment of an interinstitutional organizing committee, which will coordinate the events at the national level, with funding ensured from the budgets of the authorities involved.

Minister of Internal Affairs Daniella Misail-Nichitin said that the project represents a gesture of gratitude to the approximately 30 thousand citizens who fought to defend the integrity and independence of the Republic of Moldova.

“In the current context, marked by security challenges in the region, promoting a coherent policy of historical memory becomes a component of the state’s resilience, and the organization of these events also represents a strategic opportunity to reaffirm historical truth and to strengthen national identity. Supporting this project is a signal of unity and a minimal gesture of appreciation for our veterans,” noted Daniella Misail-Nichitin at the Government meeting.

Thus, on March 2, activities dedicated to commemorating 34 years since the beginning of the combat actions will take place, including memorial services and flower-laying ceremonies.

On March 2, 2025, it will be 34 years since the beginning of the armed conflict on the Dniester River, which lasted four months. It left a dark chapter in the history of our country. According to official data, over 30 thousand people took part in the conflict. Three hundred soldiers and civilians died, and another 3,500 were wounded.

The ceasefire agreement was signed on July 21, 1992, and political negotiations for the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict were subsequently launched.

According to a decision of Parliament, March 2 was declared the Remembrance and Gratitude Day, established in memory of the heroes who fell in the battles of 1992.
