TOP 5 Achievements of Moldova's Foreign Affairs Ministry: European integration, international support, extended diplomacy
Moldova at the end of this year took over the presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and is actively advancing in the process of European integration. The country continues to receive financial support on behalf of the EU and USA for strengthening security and energy independence, while relationships with Romania are deepened through strategic infrastructure and energy projects. Meanwhile, Moldova is expanding its diplomatic presence by opening new consulates and diplomatic missions abroad. These are the main achievements of the Foreign Affairs Ministry in 2025, presented by Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi in an interview given with MOLDPRES.
1. Moldova has taken over the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of EuropeThe presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe represents a major success for Moldova. The mandate will be exercised by the country for six months, as of November 14, 2025, till May 15, 2026. Thus, in next May, our country will host the ministerial meeting, attended by foreign ministers of the Council of Europe's member states.
“The event will be a major one and will provide the opportunity to strengthen the close ties we have with the Council of Europe's member countries. The European institution provides our country significant support in the process of European integration, I mean the improvement of the legal system and the field of human rights; these progressions help us on the European integration file,” said Mihai Popsoi.
As for the subject on the rapprochement with EU, according to the official, the progress and advancement Moldova has managed to achieve in this field represent “an important achievement of diplomacy and the entire government.”
“It is undoubtedly the merit of Deputy Prime Minister Cristina Gherasimov, colleagues from the European Integration Bureau, and the entire diplomacy as a whole, because together we are creating the groundwork for a ‘fertile soil’ within the member countries, as well as in Brussels, in order to advance and make progress in European integration,” emphasized Mihai Popsoi.
2. Financial support provided by the European Union and the United States of America
An important achievement is the support of 100 million euros offered by the European Union for strengthening the national defense and security sector.
“The support is certainly a great achievement of our diplomacy. These are the prerogatives directly assigned to the Foreign Affairs Ministry - cooperation in the field of Foreign Security and Defense Policy with the European Union, increasing aid from the European Union through the European Peace Facility programme,” said foreign affairs minister.
An important result is also the support provided by the United States - 30 million dollars for energy security.
“This contribution is a great achievement and proof of the strong partnership we have with the United States of America,” noted Mihai Popsoi.
3. Strengthening relations with Romania, development of energy and infrastructure projectsConsolidating relations with Romania is an important achievement that has brought tangible results through significant energy and infrastructure projects.
“Those bridges being built over the Prut, which have not been erected not only since independence, but since the 1970s. It is also about large infrastructure projects, that connect - from an energy, road, and rail perspective - Moldova with Romania and the European Union,” said Mihai Popsoi.
4. Signing Agreements with EU countries: social facilities and guarantees for Moldovan citizens abroad
Agreements have been signed with more countries, including France, Canada, the United Kingdom and Greece.
“These agreements have been signed for the benefit of the citizens in the Diaspora. A large part of the agreements we had in progress has already been completed and, in the coming year, we will certainly continue this process,” the official noted.
5. Opening of diplomatic missions and consulates
The deputy prime minister emphasized that opening the two consulates in the United States of America represented a significant achievement and proof of the close relationships that Moldova has with the USA.
“At the same time, the opening of new diplomatic missions in Moldova is a significant achievement and a success of our diplomacy. We will continue to work, in order to enhance both the diplomatic presence in Chisinau and the Moldovan diplomatic presence in the countries with which we have close relations, including through non-resident ambassadors, to have an efficient cost-driven approach,” added Mihai Popsoi.
The interview given with MOLDPRES is to be published on December 27, this year.
