VIDEO // Deputy Prime Minister in interview for AGERPRES: Romania as EU member state could substantially contribute to creating accurate perception regarding Transnistrian conflict settlement

Romania, as a member state of the European Union, could substantially contribute to creating an accurate perception regarding the Transnistrian conflict settlement. Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri made the statement in an interview for AGERPRES, quoted by MOLDPRES.

The official stressed that Romania has always played an important role in the country’s reintegration process, even if not a direct one.

“This support has manifested itself through backing the Republic of Moldova in strengthening state institutions and promoting reforms. The country has also contributed to the fact that the Republic of Moldova, on the right bank, has become a stronger, more attractive state, a pole of attraction for our citizens. It is already a very good example to say that Romania has always been by our side and especially that it is the country that best understands the realities in the Republic of Moldova, taking into account our shared past and history, language, culture and traditions,” noted Valeriu Chiveri.

The Deputy Prime Minister also emphasized that at present there is no international format in the negotiation process.

“The 5+2 format is non-functional and for now we are not discussing another approach. Nor are we using the one that existed until recently, but Romania, as a member state of the European Union, could substantially contribute to creating an accurate perception regarding the process of settling the Transnistrian conflict, and this is the work it is doing, I am sure,” underlined Valeriu Chiveri.

Chisinau authorities have earlier announced that the 5+2 negotiation format is no longer functional and cannot be resumed in the current regional context. It involves the participation of representatives of the parties, mediators and observers – the Republic of Moldova, the Transnistrian region, the OSCE, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, the United States of America and the European Union.
