EUROPE DAY // Italian Ambassador in Chisinau: “We are honored to stand by you at this crucial moment for Moldova’s future”
The geographical distance does not matter between Moldova and Italy, two countries linked by common Latin roots, historical affinities and by the presence in Italy of a large, dynamic and well-integrated Moldovan community. Ambassador of Italy to Moldova Giuseppe Maria Perricone has made statements to this effect on the occasion of Europe Day.
The Italian diplomat emphasized that bilateral relations were based on an intense political dialogue, significant investments by Italian companies in Moldova and cooperation projects carried out by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, in such areas as rural development and energy security.
“Dear citizens of Moldova, as many of you have experienced since the early 1990s, geographical distance does not matter for two countries linked by common Latin roots, historical affinities and by the presence in Italy of a large, dynamic and well-integrated Moldovan community. We thank you, dear friends, for your contribution to making the relationship between our countries unique in many respects. This is reflected in the intensity of the political dialogue, in the presence of Italian companies that invest and operate in Moldova, thus generating business opportunities, and in the activities of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, which cover fields ranging from rural development to energy security,” the ambassador said.
In his message, Giuseppe Maria Perricone reaffirmed Italy’s strong support, as a founding member of the European Union, for the European path of Moldova, describing European integration as a choice made by Moldovan citizens for freedom, justice and prosperity.
“This is the course of action chosen by the citizens of Moldova, the objective you have set for your country, in order to guarantee freedom, justice and prosperity for all. We admire the determination with which you are implementing the necessary reforms. We are honored to stand by you, offering support, expertise and partnership at this crucial moment for the future of Moldova and, indeed, for the future of our continent,” the message further states.
The ambassador also referred to the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which he described as a violation of international law and a threat to European peace and security.
At the same time, he highlighted the unity of European states in the face of these challenges, stressing the contribution of Moldova, including through its solidarity with Ukraine.
In conclusion, the Italian diplomat sent a message of encouragement and appreciation to Moldovan citizens:
“The courage, resilience and dignity of Moldovans have been a beacon of the fundamental values of the European family to which we belong. Moldova. Europe is me; Europe is you. Happy Europe Day.”
Moldova is celebrating Europe Day through a string of events organized by the Delegation of the European Union. In the center of the capital, the European Town has been opened, where Moldovan citizens can learn more about the culture of European states, as well as about EU projects implemented in Moldova. Congratulatory and encouraging messages for Moldovans were conveyed by European Council President António Costa, EU Ambassador to Moldova Iwona Piórko, as well as all the ambassadors of the EU member states.
