EU may increase financial support for Moldova in security sector

The European Union will continue to strengthen its financial support for the Republic of Moldova in security and resilience, including through the European Peace Facility, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said today during a joint press conference with President Maia Sandu.

The official noted that the EU wants a resilient and strong Moldova.

“We want a stronger, more secure Moldova, more capable of protecting its citizens. Around 200 million euros in assistance have already been provided through the European Peace Facility,” Kallas said.

The Vice-President of the European Commission noted that a new support package has been proposed to the member states, which provides for an increase in annual funding by 120 million euros, which would be one of the most significant contributions offered so far through this mechanism to a partner state.

“This would be the largest assistance provided under the facility for a single country,” Kallas underlined.

She mentioned that the European Union’s support includes equipment, technical assistance and projects aimed at strengthening the institutional capacities of the Republic of Moldova, in the context of the security challenges in the region.

“Our partnership in the Republic of Moldova continues to support institutions in building long-term resilience against external threats and hybrid risks,” the European official added.

Kaja Kallas reaffirmed the European Union’s political commitment to the Republic of Moldova.

“Our message is clear: Moldova is not alone. Moldova is part of Europe,” she concluded.

Kaja Kallas is paying an official visit to the Republic of Moldova on 7–8 May, with meetings scheduled with the country’s entire leadership, ministers and members of civil society.
