BTA: Flowers and Tributes Mark Hristo Botev’s Birth Anniversary in Chisinau and Corten
The 178th anniversary of the birth of Bulgarian poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev was commemorated in Chisinau, Moldova. A memorial ceremony was held at Botev’s monument in the city centre, on the street bearing his name.
The Scientific Society of Bulgarians in Moldova said the event was attended by representatives of Bulgarian public and cultural organisations, as well as diplomats from the Bulgarian Embassy in Moldova.
The ceremony was opened by Stepan Kurtev, Chair of the Bulgarian Community in Chisinau, who said the Bulgarian community in Moldova is united around Botev’s life and legacy and stressed the strong symbolic meaning of the venue.
Speaking on behalf of the Scientific Society, historian Ivan Duminica highlighted Botev’s historical ties with the Bessarabian Bulgarians, including his stay in Chisinau and the importance of this period for his development as a revolutionary figure.
Representing the Bulgarian diplomatic mission, First Secretary Kiril Dimitrov underlined Botev’s role in Bulgarian history and the lasting significance of his literary and revolutionary heritage for national memory. Other members of the Bulgarian community also addressed the gathering.
At the end of the ceremony, participants laid flowers at the monument and observed a moment of silence in tribute.
A similar commemoration was held in the village of Corten, Taraclia district. A monument to Hristo Botev was unveiled there in November 2025. To mark the anniversary, the local library arranged an exhibition titled Hristo Botev – Poet of Freedom and Heroism.
