VIDEO // Construction works at Chisinau, Vulcanesti substations advance: major equipment delivered, set

The construction works at the Chisinau and Vulcanesti substations are advancing, and the major equipment has already been delivered and installed. The progress of the works was presented today by the Energy Projects Implementation Unit (UCIPE).

The two substations are part of the strategic project for the construction of the 400 kV Vulcanesti–Chisinau Overhead Power Line.

According to UCIPE, at the Chisinau Substation, conductor stringing works are underway on the 330 kV side, along with preparatory activities for assembling the container meant for protection equipment, after which the already-assembled protection cabinets will be set.

At the same time, at the Vulcanesti Substation, the major works have been completed, with teams working on site even in unfavorable weather conditions. Thus, disconnectors and circuit breakers have already been installed, while the instrument transformers are in the process of being delivered and will be mounted in the coming period. In parallel, conductor stringing works for the busbars are being carried out.

This week, Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu paid a visit to the Chisinau Substation and requested that the works be accelerated, in order to enable the commissioning of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau Power Line by next May.

The construction works of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau overhead transmission line, also known as the Energy Independence Line, were completed in November 2025, and in January, this year, the testing of the line was carried out under difficult weather conditions.

The effective construction of the Line started in April 2024, the works being part of the Power System Development Project financed by the World Bank Group. The total value of the project is 61 million euros, of which about 27 million euros is allocated for the construction of the Line.

The Line has a total length of 157 km, crosses 35 localities in eight districts and connects the 400 kV Vulcanesti Substation with the 330 kV Chisinau Substation. It will be able to transport up to 630 MVA of power, equivalent to over 50 per cent of the country’s required consumption on peak periods.

The construction of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau power line is a project of strategic importance for our Moldova’s energy security. The new line will allow the transmission of electricity from Romania or other European markets to Chisinau without passing through the Moldovan Power Plant, located in the Transnistrian region.
