Defense Minister: Moldova to have new radar in first half of year

In the first half of the year, the Republic of Moldova will receive a new radar system to detect drones. Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatîi made the statements at today’s Cabinet meeting.

In recent days the Russian Federation has intensified its attacks against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. As a result, several instances of illegal overflight of the airspace of the Republic of Moldova have been recorded.

“We are witnessing intensified attacks by the Russian Federation against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. Consequently, there has been overflight of our airspace. State institutions have acted in accordance with national legislation, which has allowed us to take the necessary measures to ensure the security of citizens,” the minister said.

Asked why not all drones could be detected by the authorities, the minister explained that detection depends on the distance from the radar, flight altitude and the terrain. He reiterated that risks will persist as long as attacks on the neighboring country continue.

The Defense Minister stated that recently, Moldova has stepped up cooperation with neighboring states in the field of early warning and that, soon, the MD-Alert system will be implemented, which will allow not only detection, but also rapid information of citizens.

Nosatîi said that the operation to destroy the drone found yesterday near Tudora, which carried 50 kg of explosives, was quite difficult. He emphasized that Russia continues to improve the explosive payload of its drones, increasing their destruction radius.
