Prosecutor’s Office initiates criminal case after cyberattack allegedly compromised personal data of 750,000 Moldovans

Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a criminal investigation into the cyberattack that allegedly compromised the personal data of approximately 750,000 citizens of the Republic of Moldova. The investigation concerns the offenses of violating the inviolability of private life and disclosing data from a criminal investigation.

Spokesperson of the General Prosecutor’s Office Violina Moraru told MOLDPRES that the Main Office of the Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office had initiated a criminal investigation into the case, based on reasonable suspicion that these offenses had been committed.

“Procedural actions are underway. We will inform the public about the developments in the case to the extent possible, in compliance with legal provisions,” Violina Moraru said.

Approximately 750,000 state identification numbers (IDNPs) may have been targeted in unauthorized data extractions following the cyberattack on the government systems of the Republic of Moldova. According to preliminary investigations, between October 19 and 23, the attackers queried approximately one million IDNPs in an attempt to obtain personal data.
