Deputy parliament speaker says women of Moldova earn, on average, 2,615 lei less than men

Women of Moldova earn, on average, 2,615 lei less per month than men. The gender pay gap stands at 15.4 per cent. Deputy Parliament Speaker Doina Gherman has made statements to this effect, who noted that the country was set to join the International Equal Pay Coalition.

According to the cited source, every month, a woman of Moldova earns, on average, 2,615 lei less than a man.

“This means a pay gap of 15.4 per cent. And it is still too much,” Doina Gherman said.

The deputy speaker noted that, in 2022, the legislation on equal pay for equal work or work of equal value had been promoted. In her opinion, however, establishing this principle in law is not sufficient to eliminate pay disparities.

“Moldova is set to join the International Equal Pay Coalition, which includes countries that have introduced mechanisms for pay transparency, reporting and monitoring,” Gherman said.

According to Doina Gherman, the experience of these countries can be used by Moldova.

“On the other hand, women need to know the rights they already have. They can ask their employers for information about pay levels for equal work or work of equal value. They can find out whether they are being paid fairly and defend their rights,” the official said.

Doina Gherman emphasized that greater communication and information efforts were needed, so that women can learn about their rights, noting that these actions would be intensified in the coming months.

“Equal pay cannot be achieved by a single actor. It is a team effort, involving the state, employers and employees,” the deputy speaker said.

According to her, women of Moldova actively contribute to the economy, build careers, lead teams and businesses, and work in important sectors of the economy.

“At the end of the month, their work must be fairly compensated,” Doina Gherman concluded.

According to data by the National Statistics Bureau, in 2024, women earned, on average, 2,548 lei less than men: 12,787.8 lei compared with 15,335.8 lei. The disparity was 16.6 per cent at that time. In 2025, the percentage gap decreased from 16.6 to 15.4 per cent.
