Moldovan government's spokeswoman refers to changes concerning military's pensions

The purpose of the reform targeting pensions for military personnel and special-status officials is to ensure a fair and sustainable pension system that meets both the needs of employees in law-enforcement and security structures and the public interest. At the same time, a reform is needed, in order to modernize a system built more than 30 years ago and make it sustainable in the long term. The government’s spokesperson, Daniela Crudu, has made statements to this effect, after the leader of an opposition parliamentary party called on the government to abandon the proposed changes.

Daniela Crudu emphasized that the draft law was currently under public consultation and that all opinions and proposals would be analyzed before a decision is taken.

“The government respects the work of the military, police officers and all employees of the security and law-enforcement structures. We know these are professions with a high level of responsibility and risk and this is reflected in the draft, which maintains retirement conditions that are different from the public pension system for these categories. At the same time, there is a need for a reform that will modernize a system built more than 30 years ago and make it sustainable in the long term. The aim of the reform is to ensure a fair and sustainable pension system, that meets both the needs of employees in the security and law enforcement structures and the public interest,” said the government’s spokesperson.

At the same time, Daniela Crudu noted that the government stayed open to dialogue and would continue consultations before advancing the draft.

The Labour and Social Protection Ministry is proposing changes to the pension system for military personnel and special-status officials. Thus, the retirement age will gradually increase from 45 in 2027 to 50 in 2036, the required service period to obtain a pension will be 20 years compared to the current 12 years and 6 months, and the calculation base for determining the pension will be expanded. In the context, the leader of the Democracy at Home Party, Vasile Costiuc, has called on the government to abandon the increase in the retirement age for the military.
