VIDEO // President, 36 years after proclamation of sovereignty

We have the duty to defend and preserve our sovereignty, independence, and peace. We are doing this through the European integration. Only in the European Union will we be able to feel safe and strengthen our democracy. This was the message delivered today by President Maia Sandu on Sovereignty Day.

The head of state noted that 36 years ago, Moldovans fought for sovereignty and for the right to decide their own fate.

“Today, 36 years later, the Republic of Moldova is truly building its own destiny. The path we are on, that of European integration, has its beginnings in the courage of our parents and grandparents who, on June 23, 1990, decided to break away from the Soviet regime. Unfortunately, Moscow has never fully respected our sovereignty and independence. And today, the regime in the Kremlin is trying to destroy, through bombs and crimes, the sovereignty of Ukraine,” said Maia Sandu.

President Maia Sandu called for unity in achieving the strategic objective of the Republic of Moldova – accession to the European Union.

“Just like our parents and grandparents, 36 years ago, we must be united and work with dignity and courage to successfully accomplish this national objective – the European integration of the Republic of Moldova,” Maia Sandu stressed.

The Republic of Moldova is marking Sovereignty Day today. On June 23, 1990, the deputies of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic adopted the Declaration of Sovereignty – a document that opened the path to independence, democracy, and the rule of law.
