DOC // Moldovan citizens who worked legally in Canada to be eligible for social benefits
The Decree on promulgation and the Law on the ratification of the Social Security Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Canada have been published in the Official Journal and have entered into force. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will notify the Canadian side about the ratification of the agreement.
The agreement is based on standard principles of coordinating social security systems: totalization of insurance periods, export of social benefits, and proportionality.
The document regulates the establishment of the right to old-age pension, disability pension, and survivor’s pension. According to data provided by the Canadian authorities through the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Canada, in 2024 there were over 30,000 Moldovan citizens on the territory of this country.
So far, the Republic of Moldova has signed social security agreements with 23 states, of which 18 have entered into force and are applicable. These are social security agreements concluded with Romania, Bulgaria, Portugal, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Austria, Estonia, the Czech Republic, the Kingdom of Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Germany, Turkey, Belarus, Italy, Greece, Spain, and Latvia.
