PHOTO GALLERY // August 27, 1991 – the Day Moldova chose freedom
The Republic of Moldova on August 27, 1991 took one of the most important steps in its modern history. The deputies of the first democratically elected Parliament, later called the Parliament of Independence, voted for the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova, confirming its official separation from the Soviet Union.
On that day, outside the parliament building, thousands of citizens watched with emotion and hope as the Republic of Moldova proclaimed its independence and asserted its right to determine its own future.
Through the Declaration of Independence, the Republic of Moldova chose its path of development as a sovereign, democratic and free state, opening a new chapter in the country’s history. The act of August 27, 1991 laid the foundations for building the institutions of an independent state and for shaping its relations with the international community.
The photographs from the MOLDPRES Archive capture the historic moments of August 27, 1991 – from the parliament meeting and the vote on the Declaration of Independence to citizens’ demonstrations that marked this founding moment of the Republic of Moldova.
