VIDEO // President: Our domestic agenda involves preparing Moldova to sign EU accession treaty by late 2028
Our domestic agenda involves preparing the Republic of Moldova to sign the accession treaty to the European Union by late 2028. At present, we are ready to open negotiations on all chapter clusters and hope that, by the end of this year, we will see the formal decisions of the European Union, so that we can move on to the next stage. President Maia Sandu made the statement during an interview with CaleaEuropeană.ro.
According to the official, our country is ready to conclude negotiations on certain chapters, but this is not possible without a formal decision.
“We are working hard and with full responsibility to fulfill the commitments we have made to our citizens. We promised that we would succeed in preparing the country to sign the accession treaty in 2028. Of course, fulfilling this commitment depends not only on us, but also on the European Union. Technically, we are ready to close negotiations on certain chapters, but we cannot do this as long as there is no formal decision. We are opting for full membership and are working to demonstrate that what we are building here is sustainable. I see the Republic of Moldova in the European Union. This is the primary objective for which my colleagues and I are working, and I very much hope that we will make serious progress by 2028,” Maia Sandu noted.
Referring to the situation in the Transnistrian region in the context of the European integration process, the head of state said that the authorities are pursuing a peaceful, gradual and sustainable settlement of the Transnistrian conflict.
“We are discussing this with the European Union; it is a more sensitive issue. We are making progress on certain aspects of reintegration when it comes to economic integration, but, of course, there are elements related to political reintegration that are more complicated. Here, the main impediment is the illegal presence of Russian troops. Even though the security risks are low from this perspective, there is still a problem as long as an illegal army is present there. I am sure that, together with our partners in the European institutions, we will identify a formula that will not delay the Republic of Moldova’s European integration process,” Maia Sandu emphasized.
On October 28 of this year, the Republic of Moldova will receive a roadmap outlining the next steps toward accession to the European Union. The document will be presented by the European Commission together with the EU enlargement reports and will include indicative stages, deadlines and specific objectives for the most advanced candidate countries.
So far, our country has opened two negotiation clusters with the European Union: Cluster 1 – “Fundamentals,” on June 15, 2026, and Cluster 6 – “External Relations,” on July 14, 2026. Together, these cover seven negotiation chapters. The next clusters to be opened are Cluster 2 – “Internal Market,” Cluster 3 – “Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth,” Cluster 4 – “Green Agenda and Sustainable Connectivity,” and Cluster 5 – “Resources, Agriculture and Cohesion.”
