Residents of Gagauz-Yeri autonomy to celebrate Hederlez, organized by Interethnic Relations Agency, administration of Ceadar-Lunga
The residents of the Autonomous Territorial Unit (UTA) Gagauz-Yeri will celebrate Hederlez on May 6, marked each year on the day when old-style Orthodox Christians celebrate the day of Saint George. On this occasion, a programme of cultural and sports activities is planned at Ceadar-Lunga, organized by the Interethnic Relations Agency (ARI) this year.
"One of the most important cultural events of the Gagauz community – HEDERLEZ YORTUSU, will take place on May 6, 2025, in Victory Park in the municipality of Ceadar-Lunga. The HEDERLEZ YORTUSU festival is organized with the support of the Interethnic Relations Agency, which will bring artistic groups from the north of the country, thus contributing to the creation of an authentic multicultural framework," explains ARI.
The event is organized in partnership with the local administration of Ceadar-Lunga and will include art and tradition exhibitions; ethnic yards with local music and cuisine; workshops for children; craft fairs; a national Gagauz wrestling tournament GÜREŞ; activities for young people and a topic-related photo area; an exceptional festive concert; outdoor party.
"Although traditional horse races will not take place this year, the festival promises an authentic experience dedicated to cultural diversity and interethnic solidarity," indicates the Interethnic Relations Agency.
Hederlez is one of the main holidays of the Gagauz people, being marked each year on the day when old-style Orthodox Christians celebrate Saint George, the protector of agriculture and livestock breeders. It is believed that, after Hederlez, spring comes into its own, nature changes and fieldwork becomes more intense and productive.
