Great Moldovan composer Eugen Doga passes away at age of 88
Maestro Eugen Doga, one of the most respected and beloved composers of Moldova and the European cultural space, today passed away at the age of 88. The Ministry of Culture has confirmed the information.
Eugen Doga was a composer, professor, academician, and a prominent figure of national culture. Born on March 1, 1937, in the village of Mocra, in the Transnistrian region, he became known worldwide for his musical works, especially the famous Waltz from the movie, My Sweet and Tender Beast, by film director Emil Loteanu – considered by UNESCO as one of the four musical masterpieces of the 20th century.
Throughout his career, Eugen Doga composed over 200 soundtracks for film and theater, symphonic works, romances, lieder, and chamber music. He was awarded numerous prizes and honorary titles, but remained a modest person, approachable and deeply dedicated to art.
His music conquered millions of listeners and accompanied major international cultural events. Until his last years, Eugen Doga participated in meetings with students, spoke about the beauty of music and encouraged young people to pursue their artistic dreams.
In a previously conveyed message, the maestro declared: ‘’Family is my original port.” The composer was supported by his wife, Natalia, and his daughter, Viorica, who continued his artistic vision through documentary film.
The departure of Eugen Doga leaves an immense void in the Romanian and universal culture. His work will continue to endure, inspire and bring light.
