Moldova and United States discuss strengthening cooperation in culture and media

The strengthening of cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the United States of America in the fields of culture and mass media, as well as the prospects for developing joint projects was discussed by Minister of Culture Dan Suruceanu and Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in the Republic of Moldova Nick Pietrowicz.

During the meeting, the officials paid particular attention to cooperation in the field of cultural heritage preservation, including through the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP).

An example of this collaboration is the Dormition of the Mother of God Church in Căușeni, whose restoration was supported through the American fund. The works included archaeological research, consolidation of the masonry, rehabilitation of the roof, and restoration of the mural paintings. The church was reopened to the public in March 2024.

Another ongoing project concerns the conservation of the ruins of the former Beit Kaddishim funeral hall in the Jewish cemetery in Chișinău. With AFCP support, research, consolidation, and restoration works are to be carried out, and later a small memorial museum will be set up in the building.

The discussions also addressed cooperation in the field of mass media, with a focus on supporting independent press, including through the “Supporting Independent Media Grants” program. At the same time, the officials examined opportunities for developing new joint initiatives and exchanges of experience between professionals in culture and mass media.

Dan Suruceanu expressed his appreciation for the support provided by the U.S. Embassy for the development of the cultural and media sectors in the Republic of Moldova and emphasized the importance of continuing cooperation between the two countries.
