ARMENPRESS: Armenia’s EU membership is “absolutely” possible, Polish official says

Poland has expressed strong support for Armenia’s European path, with Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs State Secretary Marcin Bosacki saying that Armenia’s ambition to join the European Union is possible, although it will not happen overnight.

Speaking to Armenpress in an interview, Bosacki said Poland is ready to support Armenia’s European ambitions, including closer economic ties with the EU and the country’s efforts toward membership.He also highlighted Poland’s own experience as a former EU candidate country, saying Warsaw can share its experience of preparing for membership and negotiating with the European Union.

The official said that Poland is ready to expand bilateral cooperation with Armenia in trade, investment, defense and security. Bosacki highlighted that the growing ties between Armenia and Poland are rooted in the two countries’ shared values, including democracy, sovereignty and the right of nations to shape their own future.The interview was conducted on September 10, 2026, in Yerevan.

Bosacki noted that the European Union represents a market of approximately 460 million people and that some of Armenia’s competitive advantages—including in information technology, gaming industry and agriculture—can be leveraged in this market. In his view, diversifying economic relations and export markets toward EU member states, including Poland, represents an opportunity for Armenia.

At the same time, the Polish official drew attention to the institutional and logistical barriers that complicate access for Armenian products to the European market. He noted that the EU functions as a single market in which member states benefit from trade without internal barriers, while barriers exist for countries outside the Union. In this context, Bosacki called for reducing these barriers and for new trade agreements that would facilitate access for Armenian producers to the European market.

According to the Polish official, some progress has already been made. He cited the example of the import of approximately 1,000 metric tons of Armenian fruit into Poland this year, noting that the European market had been temporarily opened to these products. Bosacki believes, however, that if Armenia were to obtain EU candidate country status, its producers’ access to the European market could be facilitated through new instruments and cooperation agreements.

Poland also aims to contribute to the development of direct economic relations with Armenia. During the visit to Yerevan, the Polish delegation included representatives from 15 major companies in sectors such as mining, IT, the space industry and agriculture. According to Bosacki, Polish companies are interested in investments, trade agreements, and the import of Armenian agricultural products, and business representatives from both countries have already begun discussions regarding potential transactions.

Another area where Warsaw sees potential for cooperation is defense and security. Bosacki referred to the technical-military cooperation agreement signed in May by the defense ministers of the two countries and said that Polish industry can assist Armenia in the process of transitioning from Soviet or post-Soviet armory to Western and NATO standards.

The Polish official linked Armenia’s rapprochement with Western institutions to developments in the region, stating that Warsaw supports efforts toward peace and stabilization in the South Caucasus. According to Bosacki, Poland supports the TRIPP project and the reconciliation agenda between Armenia and Azerbaijan and encourages the normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey.

Bosacki presents Poland’s experience as an argument in favor of European integration. He noted that Poland became a member of the EU 22 years ago and had previously gone through the candidacy period and accession negotiations. In his view, the process of reform and preparation for European integration is not always easy in the early years, but the economic benefits can be significant.

In this context, the message conveyed by the Polish official is that moving closer to the European Union is not limited to political negotiations but involves institutional, economic, and trade transformations, as well as preparing the administration for the eventual accession process. Warsaw says it is ready to support Armenia in this process, including through the expertise of its own diplomats and experts.

Bosacki emphasized that the pace and scope of this process depend on the goals Armenia sets for itself, but reiterated that if EU accession is Yerevan’s ambition, Poland is prepared to support that goal.
