Chisinau, June 13. /MOLDPRES/- About 35 thousand smart electricity meters will be installed in the localities of our country. The actions will take place within a pilot project financed by UNDP.

Attending the event was Minister of Energy Victor Parlicov, who said that the project is part of the national plan for digitization of the energy sector.

"This project is one that was completed in record time. In the energy sector, the project also means an accelerated movement on the decarbonization dimension. We want to become a country that reaches climate neutrality before the objective set by the EU for 2050. We do not have a heritage related to fossil energies, we do not have significant underground resources, that is, this transition to decarbonization is natural. 50 percent of the energy consumed in Moldova is in buildings, the second largest consumer is transport. Smart metering would allow much better accuracy and a much better offer from suppliers. It is a small step on a very big, but extremely important road", he said.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean was also present at the event. He said that more opportunities are opening up in our country on the energy market and they must be turned to good account.

According to representatives of the Ministry of Energy, within the project, meters will be installed in public institutions and households, to help measure and make energy consumption more efficient. The data from the smart meter will reach the supplier securely and without errors, and the smart appliances will be able to start when the energy is cheaper. The first meter has already been installed at the Government. It measures energy consumption at certain intervals and will allow the introduction of differentiated tariffs according to the hour.

The smart meters are made in the Republic of Moldova. 15 thousand will be installed in the north of the country. The 35 thousand meters that will be installed represent about three percent of the number of electricity consumers.
