Around 25 percent of gross final electricity consumption covered last year by renewable energy

Renewable energy covered 24.5 percent of Moldova’s gross final electricity consumption last year. The increase in the share of green energy was driven both by the large number of producers and by the evolution of the total installed capacity at national level.

According to the National Center for Sustainable Energy (CNED), the share was estimated by comparing electricity generation from renewable energy sources with the gross final electricity consumption, calculated based on administrative information extracted from monitoring reports published on the official website of the National Agency for Energy Regulation and on in‑house data of IP CNED.

Statistics show that in the last five years the Republic of Moldova has recorded a 12‑fold increase in installed renewable electricity capacities—from 77.37 MW in 2020 to almost 1,000 MW at the beginning of the current year. In 2025 alone, more than 400 MW were installed, representing over 40 percent of total existing capacity and marking a record year for the country’s energy transition. The most widespread technology installed is photovoltaic, which has reached capacities of 710.56 MW or 72 percent of the total, followed by wind power with 246.52 MW installed, or 25 percent of total RES capacity.

Hydropower and biogas capacities amount to 16.75 MW (2 percent) and 7.16 MW (1 percent), respectively. In the summer of last year, the country reached a historic milestone in green energy production.

On Saturday, August 23, at 12:00, the country’s electricity consumption was covered entirely by local production from renewable sources.

The authorities have set ambitious objectives in this field, with strategic targets for 2030: at least 27 percent renewable energy in gross final energy consumption and at least 31.2 percent renewable electricity in gross final electricity consumption.
