Over 300 draft laws for harmonization with EU legislation to be examined by Parliament this year

Over 300 draft laws aimed at harmonizing national legislation with that of the European Union are to be examined this year by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. The topic was discussed during an event organized in Parliament, dedicated to the role of the Committee for European Integration in the process of preparing the country for EU accession.

The event was organized at the midpoint of the implementation period of the Twinning Project "Strengthening the capacity of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and its role in the process of accession to the European Union".

The meeting was attended by the Chair of the Committee for European Integration, MP Marcel Spatari, members of the committee, the leadership and representatives of the Parliamentary Secretariat, as well as representatives of the legislatures of Romania, Greece, Italy, Hungary and Austria. Representatives of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova were also present.

The discussions focused on strengthening the capacity of the Committee for European Integration in managing draft normative acts marked with the EU label and on the increased volume of work related to the harmonization of national legislation with the EU acquis. The procedures for exercising parliamentary oversight and the role of the committee in the decision-making process during the pre-accession period were also addressed.

The Chair of the Committee for European Integration, Marcel Spatari, emphasized the importance of cooperation with European partners in this process.

“We are grateful to all partners for the support provided. It is important for us to learn from our partners’ experience, because we have a lot of work to do. For this year alone, over 300 draft normative acts are planned, aimed at harmonizing national legislation with EU legislation,” the MP stated.

The leader of the Twinning project, Vasilios Svolopoulos, highlighted the important role of the Committee for European Integration in the process of bringing the country closer to the European Union. According to him, the committee’s work is essential for Parliament and for the Republic of Moldova as a whole, in the context of European integration.

The Twinning Project, financed by the European Union, aims to strengthen the capacity of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova in the process of EU accession, including through the harmonization of legislation with the EU acquis and the improvement of mechanisms for parliamentary monitoring and oversight. The project is implemented by a consortium led by the Parliament of Greece, in partnership with the parliaments of Romania, Italy, Hungary and Austria, for the period 3 February 2025 – 2 February 2027.
