Government reviews 2026 draft budget

The government is reviewing today draft state budget for 2026, a document which Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has described as a "budget of responsible investments," built on the positive economic developments of recent months and aimed at modernizing the country, supporting the economy and protecting vulnerable categories.

The draft is to be approved at cabinet meeting and subsequently sent to Parliament for review and adoption by the end of the year.

The Prime Minister announced that, for the first time in the history of the Republic of Moldova, capital investments are increasing by 55%, reaching about 3 billion lei.

"We propose a budget we call investment-focused and responsible. It is the first time that the investment part has grown so significantly," stated Alexandru Munteanu.

Investments will mainly cover the modernization of educational infrastructure, repairing and equipping kindergartens, improving school feeding systems, supporting entrepreneurs, stimulating private investments, and projects with regional and local impact.

The official emphasized that the budget is based on real indicators and positive economic forecasts.

"In the third quarter, economic growth was recorded, with over 6% only in the industrial sector. These are the first signs, but they are positive," the official stated.

Responding to questions related to public debt, the Prime Minister declared that the current level is not alarming and that investments funded through loans should be viewed as a development engine.

"This increase is not catastrophic. The European average is much higher. What’s important is that the money is used for investments that bring productivity, jobs, and better incomes. If we do this, there are no macroeconomic risks," explained Munteanu.

The Prime Minister mentioned that along with the GDP growth, the public debt ratio in the economy is expected to decrease. The government has already started discussions with the IMF mission in Chișinău to update the macroeconomic forecasts.

The Prime Minister thanked the government team for their efforts: "We worked day and night, including weekends, to present this draft on time. Special thanks to my colleagues from the Ministry of Finance."

After approval in the Government meeting, Finance Minister Adrian Gavrilița is expected to provide further details on the budget lines.
