Moldovan foreign affairs minister to pay official visits to Germany, Azerbaijan

Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi will make working visits to Germany and Azerbaijan on March 3-6, at an invitation by his counterparts of the two states.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on March 3-5, the Moldovan official will be in Hamburg and Berlin, at an invitation by Germany’s Federal Foreign Minister Johan Wadephul.

In Hamburg, Mihai Popsoi will take part in the inauguration of the Office of the Honorary Consulate of Moldova, an initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s presence in northern Germany and supporting Moldovan citizens in the region. The agenda also includes meetings with the general mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher, with representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and with members of the academic community.

In Berlin, on 5 March, the foreign minister will hold a meeting with his German counterpart at the headquarters of the Federal Foreign Office, followed by a joint press conference scheduled for 11:15.

Also in the German capital, the Moldovan foreign minister will hold talks with officials of the federal government and members of the Bundestag, including the chair of the parliamentary committee on European affairs, Anton Hofreiter, the chair of the parliamentary committee on foreign relations, Armin Laschet, the chair of the German-Moldovan Parliamentary Forum, Johannes Schraps, as well as the Chancellor’s foreign and security policy adviser, Gunther Sautter.

The agenda also includes meetings with representatives of the German business and analytical communities and participation in the conference, EU Enlargement – Perspectives for the Republic of Moldova.

At the same time, on March 6, Mihai Popsoi will pay a working visit to Baku, at the invitation of Foreign Affairs Minister of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov. During the visit, the Moldovan official will hold a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart, followed by joint press statements scheduled for 10:50. Meetings are also planned with Parliament Speaker (Milli Majlis), Sahiba Gafarova, First Deputy Minister of Economy Elnur Aliyev, as well as with representatives of the energy company SOCAR.

The visit’s agenda also includes laying flowers at the Alley of Honour and at the grave of national leader Heydar Aliyev.

The visits take place in the context of strengthening Moldova’s bilateral dialogue with Germany and Azerbaijan, including in the political, economic and energy fields.
