Moldova marks 34th anniversary of joining United Nations

Moldova today is marking the 34th anniversary of its accession to the United Nations. The Moldovan authorities emphasize that this event represents an opportunity to highlight the strengthened partnership with the UN, developed over more than three decades.

According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE), the constant support of the United Nations has contributed to advancing reforms and supporting the European path of Moldova. The projects implemented with UN’s support have targeted key areas, such as justice and human rights, health, social protection, sustainable economic development and adaptation to climate change.

In recent years, with the support of the organization, educational institutions have been renovated, the social assistance system has been modernized and compensations have been granted to mitigate the impact of rising energy resource prices. Economic opportunities for women have also been expanded, contributing to improving citizens’ quality of life.

For its part, Moldova reaffirms its commitment to remain an active and reliable partner of the UN, by engaging in efforts to maintain international peace and security, promote democracy and support sustainable development.

The authorities announce that they will continue to promote national candidates within the UN system, contributing to enhancing the organization’s efficiency and representativeness. On the occasion of this anniversary, Moldova expresses its interest in deepening cooperation with the UN, with a view to strengthening the rule of law, advancing European integration and increasing social welfare. At the same time, the importance of effective multilateralism is underlined, capable of responding to current challenges, including those generated by technological developments and risks in the cyber environment.

In the context, thanks were extended to Moldovan diplomats involved in promoting the country’s interests at the UN, as well as to the UN Country Team in Moldova, for the support provided over the years.

The UN was established on 24 October 1945, immediately after the Second World War, in order to prevent similar global conflicts and to create a framework for dialogue between states. The organization currently has 193 member states and its main headquarters is in New York (USA).
