Licensing regime for imports of wheat, maize, sunflower extended in Moldova till end of 2025

The government of Moldova today approved the extension of the licensing regime for wheat, maize and sunflower imports till December 31, 2025. This measure aims to support domestic agricultural producers and ensure balance on the domestic market, in the context of pressures from a regional production surplus and falling prices.

"This decision continues the policy previously enforced and aims to protect the interests of local farmers, who face ongoing challenges. In a regional market dominated by high supplies and low prices, it is essential to prevent distortions and maintain the competitiveness of the national agriculture," Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Ludmila Catlabuga said.

Recent assessments conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture show that, in early June 2025, wheat, maize and sunflower crops in Moldova are in good vegetative condition, with promising potential for a rich harvest. In particular, wheat has shown appropriate development for the season, while corn and sunflower have benefited from a favorable start.

Similar trends are reported in neighboring states, where spring weather conditions have supported robust agricultural development. This regional context creates an increased risk of market oversaturation, justifying the maintenance of temporary control of imports.

The licensing regime requires authorization for the imports of targeted agricultural products, allowing authorities to monitor trade flows and intervene promptly in case of an imbalance. At the same time, the measure encourages the use of domestic production, contributing to the economic stability of Moldovan farmers.

The Ministry of Agriculture said that it would continue to monitor developments in the sector and collaborate with industry partners, in order to adapt policies based on economic and climatic realities.
