
Spokesman for Moldova's government says World Congress of Vine and Wine international recognition of courage and work of Moldovan winemakers
The fact that Moldova has become the host of the World Congress of Vine and Wine is a recognition of an industry that has withstood embargoes, crises and regional war and today is becoming stronger. The spokesman for the Moldovan government, Daniel Voda, has made statements to this effect.
"A small country with a strong viticultural identity today manages to host discussions on innovation, research and sustainable wine policies. This is an international recognition of the courage and work of our winemakers," said Daniel Voda.
The World Congress of Vine and Wine is the most important global event dedicated to wine and is hosted for the first time by Moldova. On this occasion, the country on these days is visited these days by 50 official delegations and experts from all over the world.
Daniel Voda noted that Moldova was among the top 15 global wine exporters, with a quantity of 144 million liters of wine exported in 2024. Moldovan wine reaches over 75 countries, and our winemakers have won over 7,500 international medals, more than half of which are gold.
The most important export destinations for Moldovan wine are Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic, the USA, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Canada, China, Germany, South Korea, Japan.
"Moldovan wine is not just an export product - it's a success story, a national brand, and a real contribution to the image of a modern, open and globally connected Moldova," Daniel Voda also said.
Reaching its 46th edition, the World Congress of Vine and Wine brings together experts, researchers, viticulturists, oenologists, producers and policymakers from over 50 countries. The participants in the event discuss current challenges in the sector and outline global action directions in viticulture, oenology, economy and health.
The event titled, Charting the Future of Wine: Embracing Resilience, Growing Value, Encouraging Innovation, takes place under the auspices of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV).
Sessions at the Congress will be held till at the Palace of the Republic till 20 June. At the event, over 300 scientific papers will be presented, organized into four topic-related panels. Besides the scientific programme, the event's agenda includes 13 thematic visits to top wineries of Moldova.
In the last ten years, the wine industry of Moldova has undergone a significant transformation due to innovations, while managing to preserve its traditions. From indigenous grape varieties to internationally awarded wines, Moldova currently ranks 19th in the world as a wine producer, exporting 85 per cent of its production to over 75 countries. With a centuries-old viticultural tradition, Moldova has become one of the most dynamic wine regions of Europe. The country holds the highest density of vineyards per capita in the world, ranking among the top 20 global wine producers.
