Moldovan energy minister, MEPs discuss strengthening energy security and preparing for cold season

Moldova's progress in joining the European Union, strengthening energy security, sustainable development of the energy sector, and preparation for the cold season were analyzed by Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu and members of the European Parliament's Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield (EUDS), who are on an official visit to our country.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the EUDS Committee members praised Moldova's performance in implementing the EU acquis in the energy field, as well as the efficient manner in which energy crises have been managed by the authorities.

'We appreciate the consistent support of the European Union in achieving our reform and strategic goals: developing infrastructure, promoting energy efficiency, and expanding renewable sources to ensure citizens' access to reliable, competitive, and affordable energy. The energy sector performances demonstrate our firm commitment to European integration and the transition to a modern, resilient, and sustainable energy system,' Junghietu said.

In the Community Energy Secretariat's annual report for 2024, Moldova ranked first among the nine non-EU countries party to the Energy Community Treaty, with an overall score of 66%.

The Minister also emphasized that despite disinformation campaigns and geopolitical challenges, the Republic of Moldova has managed to strengthen its energy security.

The meeting highlighted ongoing efforts to increase Moldova's interconnection with European electricity and natural gas networks. Strategic projects include Vulcanesti – Chisinau line, 400 kV Balti – Suceava line and a future Strășeni–Gutinaș interconnection.

Regarding preparation for the summer period, when electricity consumption is on the rise, Junghietu listed difficulties related to limited import capacity from the European area, as well as identified solutions – including the use of existing 110 kV lines with Romania and emergency agreements with Romania and Ukraine.

Moreover, Dorin Junghietu reiterated that Moldova continues to actively invest in the green transition: since 2020, the installed capacity in renewable sources has increased eightfold.

'In recent months, Moldova has reached new records of green energy production, and the annual average coverage of consumption from renewable sources in 2025 is estimated at about 20%,' the official said.

The delegation includes Nathalie Loiseau, President of EUDS Committee, Mika Aaltola and Eugen Tomac, EUDS Committee members, as well as MEP Siegfried Muresan, Chairman of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee. Corina Mocanu-Bonnin, political adviser to the EU Delegation in the Republic of Moldova also attended the meeting.
