Speaker meets Italy's Minister of Justice
The Republic of Moldova counts on Italy's support in joining the European Union. Moving closer to good European practices will provide our country's institutions with the tools to quickly respond to existing challenges. Speaker Igor Grosu made the statements today. He held a meeting with Italy's Minister of Justice Carlo Nordi, during his visit to our country.
The officials exchanged views on the efforts of the authorities in the Republic of Moldova to counter foreign interference and misinformation, through which some groups attempt to intervene in electoral processes.
"We see what is happening in neighboring countries: there are concerted interferences, critical infrastructure is deliberately attacked, including through misinformation and manipulation. Organized criminal groups from Russia are used against the Republic of Moldova and heavily utilize social networks and propaganda. The authorities' response will be prompt, to protect the country and its citizens, and the justice dimension plays a crucial role in this regard," he said.
Discussions also covered the area of social protection and the support provided by the Italian authorities to the Moldovan community in Italy. Today, the Chamber of Deputies continues to examine the ratification of the Social Security Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Italy, after it was swiftly ratified by the Senate previously.
A Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministries of Justice of the Republic of Moldova and the Italian Republic was signed today, a document which highlights Italy's firm support for strengthening the rule of law, harmonizing national legislation with the community acquis, and combating corruption within judicial reform. Grosu stated that the Memorandum sends a strong signal of support in the reform of justice and combating corruption.
