Moldovan farmers have access to comprehensive guide for setting solar panels in fields: solar energy, agricultural crops in one system
The first guide dedicated to agri-voltaic systems, which stipulates that photovoltaic panels can be combined with agriculture without changing the land's purpose, has been developed and launched by the Energy Ministry.
The document was prepared with the support of the German Energy Agency (dena) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of Germany (BMWi), serving as an essential guide for farmers regarding the installation of photovoltaic panels in combination with agricultural crops. The document, titled, Cultivating the Sun and the Land: Unlocking Moldova's Dual Potential, is the first comprehensive material of Moldova dedicated to agri-voltaic systems.
The guide provides clear explanations on the work of agri-voltaic systems - a technology through which solar energy is produced simultaneously with plants’ cultivation on the same land.
“The material includes the basic concepts of agri-voltaic systems; essential installation criteria: panel height, orientation, inclination and the distance between rows; recommendations for suitable agricultural crops for this system, depending on light and moisture requirements; information on the legal organization of the business; state-provided support schemes; economic and financial estimates for initiating an agri-voltaic project. The document is meant for both farmers and local authorities or institutions taking decisions in the agricultural and energy fields,” the Energy Ministry noted.
Authorities say that agri-voltaic systems can enhance farmers' resilience in the context of climate change, while also contributing to the profitability of agricultural ventures.
“Placed above the lands, the panels can create a favorable microclimate: reduce water evaporation and maintain soil’s moisture; protect crops from hail, heavy rains or intense sunlight; optimize water consumption and the hydrological balance,” the cited source also said.
Thus, the plants benefit from additional protection and farmers can achieve more stable yields.
Given that approximately 75 per cent of the country's territory is used for agricultural purposes and photovoltaic panels can be installed without changing the land's purpose, agri-voltaic systems represent a strategic opportunity for the national agriculture.
The Energy Ministry encourages farmers and agricultural enterprises to consider this modern business model, which can reduce producers' energy costs; generate additional income; contribute to the increase of Moldova's energy independence and security; stimulate sustainable development in rural areas.
